Alright – I’m hoping for some input from others out there. Perhaps some of you may even have first-hand experience in one of these fields.

Via a Million grant, my local college is opening two programs: Diagnostic Sonography, and Medical Lab Technician. Each is a 2yr program which provides the necessary certification. With that said, here’s my “problem”:

I initially planned on changing careers and have been waiting for the oppotunity to get into a Sonography program.. until this popped up. I applied for BOTH programs in fact (in case I wasn’t accepted into one) and I just received word that I’ve been accepted into BOTH.. however, I can only choose one of course.

Though my heart was set on Sonography, I’ve been hearing that it may be easier to get a Med. Lab Tech job. Is this anyone’s experience? I plan to hit the local hospitals this week and talk to personnel there to get their take on it.. but if anyone has any advice on what the wiser career path might be, please, I’m all ears (er, eyes). Sonography brings home the better paycheck I understand, and I love the one-on-one interaction with patients it would offer.. but who wants to be certified as a sonographer if the need for them is few and far between (ie. I was told the local hospital has only one Sonographer on staff and no need for more, but employs a handful of Lab Techs).

Anyone? – I appreciate any input.

What is the difference between Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Ultrasound technician?

I’m interested in being an ultrasound technician, but it seems it may also be called diagnostic medical sonography? I’ve been trying google but it’s confusing me. So whats the difference?

Also, any tips to get started in that field? i’ve been looking up ultrasound tech schools, would i just enroll in that after i get my A.A.?
Ok thank you! So I would just do general, cardiac or vascular?

American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT): Upon completion of the MRI program, graduates are eligible to apply to sit for the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) – www.armrit.org National Certification examination.

I’m thinking about getting degree/licensed in Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound???

I need to know as I have my Associates Degree in College but do I need to have a Bachelors Degree to get into Medical Ultrasound? Or can I just take the class for a year and then get my degree?

Also, are there any well paid salary jobs available in New York?

I heard from my sister that this is a good medical field and she suggests I get into it. Please let me know your input. I would greatly appreciate it!

Practicing Ultrasound Sonographers: What are the pros and cons of being a diagnostic ultrasound sonographer?

I have a 4 year college degree and have been working in the business world for over a decade, but I do not find it rewarding. (In fact, I hate desk jobs.) I love helping people and learning about medical/health issues. I am considering going back to school for ultrasound sonography. What are the pros and cons of being a sonographer? Are there plenty of jobs? How easy is it to find a job upon becoming licensed? How hard is the program; including the math and science classes? (I was a liberal arts major so I haven’t taken many math or science classes.) Is it a physically demanding job (is there a lot of heavy lifting involved)? Do you enjoy your job and would you recommend it to someone else? Some people first become a radiology tech then become a sonographer. Others, go right for the sonography program (I could go right for sonography since I have a B.A. already.) Which route would you recommend? Any help or inside information would be most appreciated. Thank you so much!
