A co-worker of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. She is in her early thirties, married with two young daughters. She had a bilateral mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and will be starting radiation therapy this week.

Her family is now facing serious financial difficulties. She is presently collecting disability insurance, which only pays a fraction of what she earns. The company that her husband works for is not doing well due to the recession and he has taken a cut in pay. They do not think the business will continue past the end of this year. They are two months behind on their mortgage payments.

There are plenty of groups that provide mammograms and medical assistance but she can’t find any programs or charities that can offer assistance or a loan that would tide her family over until she returns to work. She has contacted the Sussex County (New Jersey) department of Health and Human Services but was told that they make too much money for any assistance. I contacted 211 and they said the same.

This is a perfect example of the type of family that falls thru the cracks in the system. They are / were able, with two salaries, to provide for their family with little left over after the monthly bills to put into savings or emergency fund. They do not live lavishly. The stress of possible home foreclosure cannot be helpful with her recovery.

Please let me know if there are any resources for women in her position. I will then forward that information to her.

Ok so here is the story…
I am 25, female finishing up my BA in General Studies (Liberal Arts) focused in Sociology & General Business. I just got engaged to my wonderful bf. no doubts in my mind about that at all.

Here is where the problem starts. I hate my job. It is stable, but I feel like if I stay there any longer I will drive my self crazy. The economy sucks & so I can’t find another job. I live with my parents now, but I was looking to buy condo with my fiance. Being that I hate my current job I was thinking about going to radiography school for 2 years and then go an extra year to focus in radiation therapy to help treat cancer patients.

The problem is is that for 3 years I will have no income. I feel like this is an unfair pressure to put on my relationship. We are looking to get married (small wedding) next May. What kind of wife would I be not bringing nothing to the table? He is supportive, but I am the one that handles the money, so I really do not think he has a correct concept of how we probably will not be able to afford much.

I guess my question is is WHAT DO I DO??? should I do something that in time will lead to a good (salary wise & emotionally rewarding), or should I stick it out bc I am kind of old to change things already?

Anyony that is in radiology, radiation or even the health care field – your outlook on the schooling and the job is very much appreciated.

PS: I also kind of want to have at least 2 kids before I am 35

It’s a really hard program, much harder than it needs to be due to the instructor (who is also the program chair) having an superiority complex! I hate her!!! I just really also don’t know if I want to be dealing with phlegm, snot, and mucus for the rest of my life. I know the salary is good but I also want to be happy. So here are my choices: Physical Therapy assistant, Rad Tech, Radiation Therapy, RN, or Therapeutic massage. Or should I just stick it out with Respiratory Therapist?? If you have any info on any of these occupations and what they pay, I would really like to hear it please. Thanks
Okay maybe not so much an RN because I read they have to go to school for a long time and deal with blood and gross stuff.

Okay, so my first year of (community) college is nearly completed, and I am not sure if I should consider it a success, failure, or somewhere in between. First-of-all, my parents moved out of state right after my senior year (of high school), and I wasn’t ready to go to an university yet, so I decided to go with them, and to the local community college. Due to state regulations, I was only allowed to go part time for the first year if I ever wanted to get in state tuition. So long story short, I have 16 credits under my belt: the first and second English composition, college algebra, psychology, and the first human anatomy and its lab(lab is one credit). Two of the three-credit classes I got an A in, and I’m likely getting B’s in the three other three-credit classes, and a B in the one-credit class. So my GPA from all 16 credits from the classes will likely be 3.375. I do admit I kind of slacked in the second semester. I can do much better. I was considering applying for the 2-year radiation therapy program, and it only considers the GPA of the prerequisites, which will be about 3.49. That will likely not be enough, as a lot of people in their late 20s, early/late 30s, and older apply to that program, and it only accepts 20 students a year. Kind of disappointed about that, but I was not sure I wanted to just do a 2-year program(not that it is anything bad, but being 19 years old, I have time to do a longer program).

So my question is does this sound like a successful first campaign in (community) college? Is a 3.375 GPA a good GPA for those classes? Is it normal to not know what you want to do for sure at 19 years old? I mean a good percentage of the people I knew in high school already have picked out undergraduate majors at universities…one is even going for biology(pre-med), which is something I am considering. Then I look at myself, (forcefully, due to in-state tuition regulations) taking only 16 credits at a community college with no real direction right now, and I feel like I am falling behind everyone. Last year in high school, everyone was in the same place education-wise, but now it seems they all advanced past me.

As for potential careers, I am considering either radiation therapy(if by chance, I am able to make it into the program), education(math, obviously would have to transfer), medical technology(4-year program at a nearby university that I would have to transfer to), biology(pre-med, would have to transfer), respiratory therapy(program at cc, probably easier to get into than radiation therapy), radiology(program at cc, likely easier to get into than radiation therapy), nursing(either at cc, or could transfer to university), or physical therapist(transfer to university). Anyone go into any of these programs? Was it easy to get into? How is the job like? Good salary? What kind of classes should I take in the community college?

If I transfer, should I complete my associates first, or transfer with 30 credits?

I will be graduating early next year in Feb… After my graduation I have two different fields in my mind that I wanted to explore. One is Radiation Therapy and the other one is Physician Assistant. I need to apply soon to different schools but I need help in deciding which one? Can someone highlight few things about both of the prof. plz? I will be going for the Masters degree. If you have information on the salary… Job scope… there is just one thing I do not like about Physician Assistant is that I cannot stand blood. I mean I can if I do not have any choice BUT I hope someone can give me a good response…

Thank you

And like I always say PLZ NO NONSENSE OK…..
Well for someone who asked this: All of the Health Prof. DO NOT deal with blood. Ofcourse there are exceptionsssss but if i cut myself that would be blood too compared to if someone has been shot. So I hope i answered your question

Which factor, in your opinion, is the most important when it comes to choosing a major? Is it the structure of the major, the opportunities for graduate school, the career salary, your interest in the subject, or is it something else? I am having a very difficult time deciding between two majors, Radiation Therapy and Biomedical Engineering. I am interested in both. I love science, which is a significant part of both majors, though Biomedical Engineering has a little more science. However, I also love interacting with people, and Radiation Therapy contains more interpersonal work than Biomedical Engineering. So basically, I will be happy doing either of these jobs. However, there are other factors which are influencing my decision, and this is causing my indecision. I like Radiation Therapy because it is more of a program than a traditional major. You need 50 credit hours worth of prereqs, which I already have, and then you apply to the program. Because of my GPA, and more importantly, my prereq GPA, my academic advisor said she is 99% certain I will get accepted. The professional core is very structured and goes by quickly. You have class from 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, for 22 months straight, and then you are done. I like this more than the structure of Biomedical Engineering, because I do not have many of the classes in the major and will be in school for at least another 3 years. However, I am also taking graduate school into consideration. Biomedical Engineering is better in this area. Biomedical Engineering pretty much contains the entire pre-med and pre-physical therapy curriculum in the major, so I would not have to take additional classes to apply for these programs, which I may want to. Biomedical Engineering also has graduate degrees, whereas Radiation Therapy does not. The salaries pretty close. Radiation Therapists make an average of ,000 a year, and Biomedical Engineers make an average of ,000 a year. So basically what I am asking is, if you are trying to decide between two majors that you would equally enjoy and with near equal pay, what would be next most important factor? Would you rather get a degree quickly and get right out on the workforce, or would you want a degree with good opportunities for graduate school? I know this is long, and I thank you for staying with me.
