I’m not in the filed, but I believe it’s a good job, because many many many women get pregnant. In addition to that, it’s used for things other than pregnancy as well (ex. diagnosis of some diseases), so I believe Ultrasound techs are always needed.

I am currently a DMS (Diagnostic Medical Sonography) student. In this specialization (also called General Sonography), you learn about abdominal, pelvic, neuro, ob/gyn (“baby” u/s), breast, etc. In Vascular Ultrasound you ultrasound blood vessels, and in Echocardiography, you ultrasound the heart.

Yes this is definitely a good field to be in, because it is in the medical field (in demand), flexible schedules, the pay is good (avg- $60k/yr.), and the most prevalent degree type is a 2 year associate’s. If you are interested in anatomy and enjoy helping people, you would probably like ultrasound.

Even though I am just getting started, I already love it. It is really interesting and fun. I would recommend that you job shadow a sonographer for a day and see what a typical day is like.

Be prepared, most DMS programs are highly competitive and may have waiting lists as long as 1 or 2 years. So you have to be very committed, but it will be well worth it.

    Good luck :)
