Career Change To Radiology: How To Specialize In Mri / Ct?
I have a bachelor’s in Business, and have been working for 18 years in design (first textbook publishing, then later in building renovations). I’m interested in switching to the health care field (for job stability/income reasons, as well as the fact I have an interest in health). I’m currently taking prerequisite courses, so I can apply for a Radiology Tech program (an associates degree program). I’m in touch with several local colleges that offer the associates degree in Radiology, but I’m interested specifically in how I work towards a position in MRI, or CT, or sonography (which seems to pay a bit better than a simple radiology tech). I get the impression that most MRI or CT techs have the same radiography education (and certification) as basic radiology/radiography techs, and then they simply get on-the-job training for MRI/CT…. is this correct? Or, is there additional certification necessary? I’d be interested in hearing from people who started out with a basic radiology/radiography certification, and who then moved into MRI or CT, or sonography. How did you do this? Is the pay significantly better? What other areas of radiology (or what career path) would you recommend to someone who is just starting this career change? Thank you. You can respond online, or directly to my email.

Yes, CT and MRI techs cross-train on the job after becoming a rad tech. After doing it for so long, you can take the ARRT registry in those modalities. Sonography requires additional schooling. You can find more information here: https://www.asrt.org/content/aboutthepro…
