Can You Move Up In Your Career As A Ultrasound Tech/ Diagnostic Sonographer?
I have a Bachelor’s in Health Administration from an Accredited University and I was thinking about going to school to become a ultrasound tech/diagnostic sonographer. I graduated a more than a few months ago and I have not been able to find a job probably because of the economy. I feel like I am wasting my time waiting and looking for a job, so I have decided to go back to school to make use of my free time. I have been looking into becoming a radiology tech or ultrasound tech, but I am leaning more towards ultrasound tech. I have a few questions.
1. Would I be wasting my bachelor degree to become an ultrasound tech?
2. What specific positions can I move up to in sonography or radiology?
3. Or what would you suggest in my situation (I have work experience but not in health care) ?
Thank you so much for your help!!!

I think becoming an ultrasound technician is a great idea. It’s rewarding and highly paid field. To answer your first question, although you do not need a bachelor’s degree to start on your ultrasound tech degree, it will certainly help and you probably could breeze through or skip and get credit for classes you already took in college, such as physics. You could get a job in an ob/gyn clinic, a hospital, or a 3D ultrasound clinic, to name a few options.
I can tell you that the demand for ultrasound techs is pretty high and depending on where you live, you probably will not have a problem finding a job with that degree.
Generally, your idea seems good considering the current state of the economy. Many people are thinking about going back to school instead of continuing to look for a job, and if you have the time and you can afford it, it’s probably the right thing for you at this time.

It sounds like you have a lot of business experience, but you need to gain some experience within the health care. I suggest that before you do an ultrasound or diagnostic sonographer, you should do something like a diagnostic imaging clerk. This will allow you to become familiar with the different procedures that are done in this area, and it would allow you to get some experience and then you can move your way up to something that is way more technical.
